I love red, always have. It’s my first color choice. Always. I’m attracted to any product that comes in red. A red bucket, red mix master, even red tractors. I stop myself my purchasing these, but I am helpless when it comes to red shoes. Or red sweaters. Or red purses. Red notebooks, water bottles, […]
Art Quilts
I began stitching in high school. For the next 20 years I always had a ‘kit’ going…needlepoint, crewel, or counted cross stitch. I just love the act of hand stitching, it soothes me. Now, as an artist, I’m creating my own one-of-kind pieces, often combining fabric, paper, and felt to make a soft, pliable surface to stitch. I love the making of art, and cloth is an especially appealing surface for me.
Balboa Park Landmark
This piece began with a quick watercolor I did of California Tower that I printed onto silk organza. The color palette with touches of green, and the images of plants and flowers were inspired by the gorgeous landscape of Balboa Park. The pinks, creams, and ecru, and the stitched and implied arches represent the architecture […]
California Tower: Balboa Park
This piece began with a quick watercolor I did of California Tower and the stitched replica of that sketch. I’ve visited beautiful Balboa Park many times in the last 26 years that I have lived in San Diego. At each visit, I’m struck by the architecture of the buildings and then the colors of the […]
Red Rock Petroglyphs
Sedona, Canyon de Chelly, Santa Fe, Taos. Arizona and New Mexico. The beautiful and dramatic Southwest. The colors of those landscapes stay with me. They are so evocative of the history, the heritage, and the deep and rich Native American culture. I’ve been working with the warm colors of red, orange and yellow (oh, I […]
Dreaming Cuba Tobacco Fields
It’s because of Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway. Well, his house. His house in Key West, Florida. A hundred years ago (I always say that when I don’t want to say really how many years ago it was….it was the 1970s) I visited Hemingways House in Key West, Florida. It was fascinating. But what stayed in my […]
Dreaming Lake Como
Lake Como, Italy, is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Surrounded by high, often snow capped mountains, its water changes color constantly. Clouds come in fast, from the Alps. From the lake, you can see hundred year old grand villas. The air is clean and clear. I’ve been there twice. And still […]
