Christine wrote about my online classes: It’s been a lot of fun to share an on-line class with a responsive teacher and an affirming group of amateur artists. I very much appreciated Jane’s clear and concise comments and participants’ enthusiasm and encouragement.

Susanna Johnson wrote “I felt like a door swung open in my mind,” in “Watercolor Sketchbook: Designs from Life.”

Check out these free videos, to get a look at my teaching style.

And be sure and check out Danny Gregory’s online Sketchbook Skool. I teach in the ‘Beginnings‘ course!

Art is You

Thursday, September 17: Sketching and Watercolor: Autumn

Want to learn to draw and paint what you see? Want to create an illustrated journal page of your day, your garden, your trip? Spend the day drawing and painting in a relaxed supportive environment. Jane will show you how to take the time to really look at object and draw what you see. Then she’ll demonstrate the use watercolors using a straight-forward, intuitive approach. You’ll create a 9×12 inch journal page as unique as your own handwriting. Jane will show you how to enhance your drawings with creative page layout tips and some text.

Friday, September 18: Abstract collage using the Gelli Plate

If you’re new to mono-printing on gelli plates, or just love it, like I do, you’ll enjoy this class! You’ll learn many mono-printing techniques and use them on different sheer papers. By lunch time, you’ll have a stack of gorgeous colored papers! After lunch, you’ll compose and assemble a finished layered piece (or two) of original artwork, using your own beautiful papers with some additional mark making and maybe even a stitch or two. You’ll learn about composition and focal point combined with lots of pattern.

Saturday, September 19:   Felt like Stitching

You will concoct your own original 3D artwork from wool felt.  You’ll design a pattern and then with felt and embellishments and hand stitching, create a small pillow or wall hanging. We will be sitting and stitching, chatting and no doubt laughing throughout the day. You learn composition,  design and a myriad of stitching techniques with thread and beads and walk away with a small precious fiber art piece.

Sunday, September 20:  Your Totally Original Small Art Quilt

Are you new to art quilting, or just want to learn some different approaches to add to your fiber art skills? Join Jane and play with cloth and color and hand stitching to create a unique art quilt from your own original designed fabric.

In the morning, after determining your theme, you’ll design and carve your own one-of-a-kind stamp(s) to use as a surface design element on cloth. Then you’ll add some color to the cloth using paint, and stencils. In the afternoon, you’ll use your newly created original fabric to create a small art quilt using simple hand stitching and basic embroidery stitches. (Or, later, you may want to use your finished piece as a journal cover, tote bag embellishment or pillow top.)

October 26: #124 Text on Textiles
This class will be meditative in many ways. We’ll be doing some journaling on fabric (I’ll give you writing prompts) then we’ll tear and cut the fabric, combine it with other small bits of fabric, paper and ephemera to create small hand stitched ‘story squares.’ You’ll learn some hand embroidery stitches, ways to assemble diverse materials (paper, cloth, rocks etc) and create interesting compositions. Near the end of the day, you’ll assemble your squares into a small, very personal art quilt twelve inches square.

October 27: #233 Free Spirited Free Motion
By doing a series of very small quilts in class, you’ll learn to combine cloth and paper and free motion machine stitching with a little colorant to create a meaningful and quite fabulous art quilt. Using your own, or copyright free images, Jane will show you how to stitch like an artist. Your stitched image, fabric, and paper will tell a story, or recall a memory. You’ll assemble what you’ve done at the end of class to create a nearly finished quilt. Jane will show you how to free motion machine stitch like an artist.

October 28: #327 Stamp Design and Carving
Hand carved rubber stamps, of your own design, are a wonderful addition to an artist’s personal ‘tool box ‘for fabric surface design and mixed media work. Create a few designs to be used again and again on paper, cloth or any surface. Jane will guide you to develop images, and then determine what your design would look like as a stamp. Then, you’ll learn how to carve the design into small printmaking blocks. You’ll use your originals stamps and this skill again and again!
