Christine wrote about my online classes: It’s been a lot of fun to share an on-line class with a responsive teacher and an affirming group of amateur artists. I very much appreciated Jane’s clear and concise comments and participants’ enthusiasm and encouragement.

September 24 workshop: YOUR GEOGRAPHY OF LOSS: Creating a Small Art Quilt with Jane LaFazio and Patti Digh
This unique one-day workshop combines the writings, teachings, art, and voices of writer Patti Digh and artist Jane LaFazio. Using Patti’s writing prompts and stories and Jane’s art and facilitation of the artistic process, this day is about where you are now and about rediscovering possibilities. It is about creating space to grieve and sharing your stories of loss – and it’s about creating space to celebrate life. It is about using what life throws at us to make art. Our day together will not be all about loss–but also about life, great love, humor, and community.
We will combine writing, personal mementos, and textile arts to create a small art quilt about loss in your life, whatever that means to you at this moment in time. You’ll write to prompts provided by Patti Digh and then with artist Jane LaFazio’s guidance, you’ll create a small art quilt full of personal meaning.
• You will:
• You’ll learn the joy of just sitting and working with your hands.
• Learn a variety of fabric embellishment techniques
• Create a finished work of art by the end of the day
• Gain insight into the gifts that loss brings us–and how it can also block and stop us from creating
• Explore all these issues in a safe space
• Experience a uniquely facilitated process
You’ll learn some hand embroidery stitches and creative ways to assemble diverse materials like paper, cloth, rocks, etc, along with some tips on composition.
And you’ll probably learn something about yourself and your thoughts about grief and loss.
This class will be meditative in many ways. We’ll be doing some stream of consciousness journaling on cloth. We’ll write about our own experience of grief and loss. (We will give you writing prompts and the special pen) then we’ll tear and cut the fabric, combine it with other small bits of fabric, paper and ephemera to create a small hand-stitched art quilt imbued with your thoughts on grief and loss. Only you will know the power of your little, one-of-a-kind hand-stitched quilt.

You can get the details about the workhop here.
